Uphold the Trust of Those you Serve

By Diane Evans

Recently, during a speaking engagement, I made the point that long-term care faces perhaps the highest cybercrime risks of all healthcare.

When it came time for questions, a man in the audience slapped down his hand and asked why it matters if information gets out.  Truly, the question is worth addressing, if only as a reminder of why it matters greatly.

For bad actors, wins are scored when system vulnerabilities are exploited to gain entry into databases rich with Social Security numbers, credit card numbers and insurance information all in one place.  It’s the ultimate treasure trove.

When serious data breaches happen, both individuals and organizations face consequences.  Consider:

  • No one wants to deal with fraud and identity theft that can result from a breach.  It is a personal violation, an unwanted disruption, and a breach in trust in cases of negligent healthcare providers.

  • For an organization, a data breach has potential to disrupt operations, interrupt care and cause serious financial setbacks.   Reputation can be damaged as well.

With trust and reputation on the line, prevention matters and good-faith effort becomes a must.  Of course there are no foolproof solutions to guarantee against a data breach.  But proven, simple precautions – such as regular software updates and two-step authentication – can and do prevent breaches.  Just like an alarm system, good lighting and a watchdog can protect against intrusions and keep your family safe.
